19-Year-old has frequent dizzy spells.

A 19-year-old young man presented to my office, two months prior to him leaving on a 2 year service mission for his church, complaining of frequent dizzy spells.  He had been to his primary care physician who sent him to an ear nose and throat specialist.  They were unable to find the cause of his dizzy spells.  A history taken when he came in revealed that he had been involved in an automobile accident a few years prior.  A chiropractic examination and X-rays demonstrated, among other things, that his Atlas (the first vertebrae in the spine that the skull actually […]

A Brief Introduction.

Chiropractors are healthcare providers who primarily perform skilled manipulations (adjustments) to the spine and/or extremities. Their goal is to correct or improve alignment, reduce pain, and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself. In addition to adjustments, Chiropractic care may also involve other treatments such as heat and ice, electrical stimulation, relaxation techniques, rehabilitative and general exercise, counseling about diet and other lifestyle factors, and dietary supplement recommendations. Spinal Manipulation Reduces Oxidative Stress in Cells!

Twenty-three chronic neck or back pain patients received spinal manipulation twice a week for five weeks. Pre- and post-treatment blood tests showed an increase in the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). SOD and GPx have been observed to decrease oxidative stress in cells. Oxidative stress is associated with reduced telomere length, a biomarker of biological aging. Adjust Your Monitor!

After following 559 office workers for one year, researchers have determined that the best predictor for the onset of neck pain is perceived muscle tension. Of the top three factors associated with perceived muscle tension, only monitor height is modifiable, with the other two being female gender and history of neck pain. So, if you work in an office setting, adjust your monitor so it’s at eye level. Smoking Compromises Spinal Disks.

As if there were not enough reasons to quit (or never start) smoking, a new study finds that nicotine can reduce the presence of the natural lubricant called glycosaminoglycan in the spinal disks by between 50-65%. When normal function is hindered, the cartilage in the disks can begin to wear down, leading to the painful condition called degenerative disk disease. PLOS ONE, August 2015
